The bravest guy I’ve ever met
March 26, 2007 at 3:46 pm | In Random musings | Leave a CommentA few years ago, I was on assignment in Dusseldorf. It’s a difficult thing because the krauts aren’t exactly famed for their hospitality or their partying spirit.
Fortunately I met an Austrian in the German office who was a kindred spirit. We got along like a house on fire, and stayed friends long after he left the company. He even taught me to ski (well sort of. What I learned was to go down a melting glacier on my back, screaming like a girl – it’s another story I should write one day).
A little while ago, my Austrian friend was diagnosed with MS, and told that he’d never be able to hold down a job again. He lives with his wife in Vienna, and I’ve been meaning to visit for a while now.
This last weekend, he was in London, and I had the chance to catch up with him and his wife again. He’s aged so much that it scared me a little. We had some time alone where we spoke about the good old days, and he told me a little about what it’s like for him to live with MS. It would frighten the crap out of me, I know that. Apparently last year, he wok up one morning, and the entire right hand side of his body had just stopped working. His wife later told me how it frightened her to see him get up out of bed, and fall flat on his face because he didn’t realise that this had happened yet.
The thing that really amazed me most, though, is that he isn’t bitter at all. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself. In fact, the only thing that he seems to be afraid of is how much hsi condition frightens and upsets his wife and the people who love him. He’s actually grateful that he doesn’t have some of the symptoms that MS can cause. For example he was telling me h0w grateful he is that he doesn’t get the painful seizures, and that he is able to use the more mild (amino-acid based) of the possible continuous treatments.
He still has his sense of humour, and it humbles me to be around him – especially if I look at how trivial the things that I complain about are.
Re-orgs redux
March 21, 2007 at 10:25 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentSo the rumours about what’s happening to yours truly are starting to get some meat on the bones.
I now know for sure that my technology group is being moved into a Marketing reporting line. The new joint Technology and Marketing Group will be called ‘Consumer Internet Service Propositions’ (I’m trying to convince them to add the word ‘Retail’ so the acronym will be CRISP).
So under the marketing director, there will be a technology group, and a marketing group dedicated to Internetty type propositions. The rumour is that, hanging between these 2 legs will be a third leg (or penis, if we stick with the legs analogy) that will be a single group of marketing and technology people charged with innovation and joint ventures. This is, apparently, where I am being sent.
Current rumours as to the location of said innovation unit, rumours are evenly split between:-
- Dusseldorf
- Lisbon
- California
Of the 3, Dusseldorf would eb my least favourite, but then they do have roast pig, and great beer – what more could you really want?
Hopefully all will become clear soon. In the interim, I have to fly to the states for a set of workshops with Yahoo in California, and with Microsoft in Redmond. April will be a busy travel month!
Woohoo! I got mine Deutche Auto back!
March 21, 2007 at 10:06 am | In Cars | Leave a CommentLate esterday afternoon, Richard at Merc called me to tell me what they had found.
Apparently the cable connecting to the sensor was stretched tight over a bracket. They re-routed it around the bracket, and the tension disappeared. Their theory is that, when the engine was running, the movement could occasionally have been creating a connection issue with the cable.
So after adding 90 Miles to my odo (and using a quarter tank of my petrol – that miffed me a bit, I’ll tell you – what with the price of petrol here in the UK…), they polished it up to look as good as new, and I got it back last night.
No problems yet – touch wood.
I just want to drive my Deutche car!
March 19, 2007 at 11:48 am | In Cars | 2 CommentsOn Friday night, heading home from work, it happened again. Car went into ‘Limp Mode’, and little old grannies in zimmerframes overtook me.
Service was great again, and the technician was with me in half an hour again. They gave me a replacement car again, can’t fault any of that (except that this time the replacement car smells like a mini-cab inside).
Damn it though. I didn’t spend that sort of money on a car to have it spend most of it’s life in a Merc workshop! If I were living in certain states in America, and it happened one more time, I could invoke the Lemon law, and either be given my money back, or a brand new car! No Lemon laws in England though…)c:
Re-orgs in the air
March 16, 2007 at 11:13 am | In Random musings | Leave a CommentAs regular as clockwork, our company is having it’s seasonal re-org – and the rumour is that this one is a biggy. 30% cuts across the board. Much bigger than the winter 10% cut, or the Autumn 20% cut.
Anyway, our new CTO stood in front of us all, and explained to us that the reason why we aren’t innovative like google is that we are all too old and too male. If he had an organisation of 23 year-old women, well, then he’d have the most innovative team in the world. No mention of the fact that the processes he’s put in place completely squash any hope of innovation (something that we used to be quite good at).
The he told us about the great successes that we’ve had. How we’ve saved €450 million in a key area, and how we’ve managed to deliver great successes (inspite of the fact that 2/3 of the organisation tasked with delivering were laid off half-way through the project, and the rest were moved between projects and even continents at least twice).
Afterwards was Q&A, where he completely missed the fact that people who asked about the importance of their function in the new organisation were actually asking about how safe their jobs are. It eventually took an HR person to stand up and say that there would in-fact be cuts in all those areas, and that the importance described by the CTO didn’t preclude these cuts…
That’s why I’m taking my team to the golf course this afternoon. We’re going to walk around, and hit a little white ball just as hard as we can. Hopefully when the details of the new organisation come through for the 1 April re-org (I checked – apparently it isn’t a joke) one of 2 things will happen.
- I get an interesting new job with an innovation requirement, and enough freedom from the bullshit processes to actually do some innovation.
- I get a nice little exit package.
Worst case scenario is that I get stuck in another crappy role in a temporary organisation that gets blocked from doing anything worthwhile – while the cockney tries to figure out how he wants to make the next round of cuts, and how to explain the lack of moralle and innovation in his little gulag…
Merc Rocks!
March 15, 2007 at 11:01 am | In Cars, Random musings | 3 CommentsNothing in this world can ruin your day quite like driving into work, and having your 6 Month old Merc start to give trouble.
That’s how my day started yesterday. Jumped in the car, pulled out of the driveway, and everything was fine, but the moment I tried to speed up, I realised that my car was in a very bad way. She wouldn’t rev past 2,000, and her 0-60mph time was something like 15 minutes. It was the most depressing thing I’ve endured in ages!
After limping into the office, and parking, I looked up the number, and phoned merc. That was around the time that my day started to improve. Within half an hour, they had a technician at my office, to take a look at my car. After 10 minutes of looking at the car, he informed me that the car had entered ‘Limp Mode’, which was an indication that a sensor somewhere had picked up a problem. He arranged a courtesy car for me (An ‘M’ Class, same as my Merc, not some dodgy little thing), and took my car down to the workshop.
In the afternoon, I got a call from the workshop informing me the names of the people assigned to work on my car, and that they would be in touch shortly. However, if I had any questions, I should call David, who was the senior person looking at my car.
By 3PM my replacement car was delivered to my office.
This morning at 10:30am David phoned me to let me know that the problem that had caused my car to go into ‘Limp Mode’ was with an air volume sensor that was reading incorrectly. The sensor had been replaced, and the car had been thoroughly tested. It was currently being cleaned, and will be delivered to my office at 11:15 this morning.
With service like that, I think that Merc will have me as a customer for a very long time!
Here’s to technology, and helpfull people!
March 2, 2007 at 3:45 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentThis week, I had to be in Madrid for a technical workshop, so on Monday afternoon I merrily drove down to Heathrow’s long-term parking lot, found a nice sheltered spot for Viki (my car), and headed off to the Iberian peninsula. A couple of days later, I get back to Heathrow, jump in Viki, and then do the mad panic – can’t find my ticket thing. I looked everywhere, unpacked my bags, nothing. So I drove down to the spot where you pay your ticket, parked my car, and steeled myself for the ‘Losing your ticket is an £50 fine’ discussion.
I walked into the customer services area, and for once – this wasn’t just a name. The nice girl behind the counter asked me for my registration number, punched it into her computer, and brought up a photo of me arriving at 2PM on Monday. After taking a copy of my photo id for security sake, I was charged the correct rate for the time I had been there, and bid farewell with a smile on my face. Awesome!
Thanks very much to Parking Express. You guys rock!
